Michael Mann has confirmed that Heat 2 will use AI and digital de-aging technology to tell a story that moves across timelines, both before and after the 1995 original. Speaking at the Lumière Film Festival, Mann said, “I don’t experiment with technology gratuitously.
When I have a dramatic or aesthetic need for it, then I go deep into what I need… aging and de-aging may be very important in the next film.” The sequel, now produced by Amazon MGM’s United Artists after leaving Warner Bros., will shoot in Chicago, Los Angeles, Paraguay, and possibly Singapore. Mann promised a full theatrical rollout in the U.S. — “probably in about 4,000 cinemas and for at least 45 days” — in 2027.
He also teased that Heat 2 begins one day after the original’s ending, with Val Kilmer’s character on the run, while exploring events before the first film.
